Travis restored…
In 2012 the Garden City Golf Club tapped Tom Doak and Jim Urbina to oversee the restoration of their 12th green. In the decades prior Robert Trent Jones was hired to flatten this green and make it more “fair”. Thankfully the club has finally come around to restoring the artful interventions brought to the golf course by Walter Travis. The routing may be credited to Devereux Emmet but the golf course we know today with its variety of bunkers, mounds, and tricky green surfaces is all due to the genius of Walter Travis.
His green at the 12th is one of the most unique and possible even a “one-off” design because of its severity. The green is characterized by large, sharp mounding which surround and encompass the entire interior of the putting surface. Poor shots are severely penalized but a good shot is duly rewarded.
