US Open deconstruction…

In 2014 I had the privilege to work alongside Bill Kittleman, who was the longtime head professional at Merion Golf Club, a Yale graduate of engineering, and an original associate of Gil Hanse in his early days as a golf architect. I shaped several bunkers using a revetted edge method, pioneered by Gil and Bill in the early days of Hanse Golf Design. We also supervised the construction team while they put several bunkers back together following the US Open Championship in 2013. The fairway lines were also restored to their usual width for regular member play.

The two weeks I spent with Bill Kittleman were invaluable to my development as a shaper and golf architect. More than anything Mr. Kittleman was a true gentleman and showed me the meaning of grit and perseverance.
