Brookside Country Club
Macungie, PA

Our master plan with Brookside Country Club developed quickly in the Fall of 2021 and we broke ground the following year. July 2024 marks the 1 year anniversary of our completed master plan restoration at Brookside Country Club in Macungie, Pennsylvania.  Brookside hired us to undertake a subtle approach which honored the original architecture and also enhanced some of the great features throughout the golf course.  Our first step was a much needed thinning of overgrown trees so that we could allow the beautiful collection of maples, oaks, and chestnuts to thrive. This critical stage really allowed the design to breath for the first time in perhaps 40 years!

Among the features which make this golf course unique are two historic lime quarries which come into play on the par-3 12th and tee shot of the par-4 16th, while the 6th green sits atop an abandoned lime kiln which was used to make mortar, plaster, and stucco in the early 20th century.

The expansion of the greens were also a focal point of our project and if you come to enjoy a round at Brookside, you will be delighted with these golden age putting surfaces, built in 1929 by landscape architect Frank Meehan, carefully restored and expanded by our fantastic crew. The greens have a great variety of size, shape, and tilt with just the right amount of subtly that begs for the course knowledge needed to navigate a set of 95 year old greens.  For the bunkers throughout the golf course we used original photography from the 1940’s to guide our stylistic choices but also had to “un-do” some of the excesses of previous renovations to make the design more functional, maintenance efficient and most importantly, strategic.  Overall the golf course presents itself as a family friendly place to play golf which can also challenge better golfers who choose to play the back tees from 6552 yards.  The elevation changes, creek crossings, and small sloping greens do more than enough to test all levels of play on a regular basis.

We are extremely fortunate to have had this opportunity and many thanks are owed to the dedicated members who spearheaded this project with Stein Golf Design and believed in us!
